[ Nathan Mitchell ]


An Arizona native, Nathan Mitchell is the founding hornist in the Sonoran Brass Quintet and has been a member of the Arizona Opera Orchestra since 2000. Mr. Mitchell also performs regularly with the Phoenix Symphony, Tucson Symphony and New Mexico Symphony.

A versatile artist, he is in demand for Broadway productions, having performed with the national touring companies of Wicked; The Lion King; The Producers; Thoroughly Modern Millie; Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat; West Side Story; 42nd Street; Kiss Me, Kate; Titanic; Guys and Dolls; The Sound of Music and innumerable others.

Mr. Mitchell’s concert appearances include engagements with Barry Manilow, Michael Crawford, The Moody Blues, Johnny Mathis, Clay Aiken, Mannheim Steamroller and Josh Groban. Since 1997 he has spent each summer serving as Principal Horn and Faculty Brass Coordinator of the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria. He is also the founding hornist of the Sonoran Brass Quintet.

Mr. Mitchell can be heard on numerous recordings, including A Brassy Night at the Opera featuring Sam Pilafian, Thomas Bacon and David Hickman, and Capitol Quartet: Anything Goes, both on Summit Records, and R. Carlos Nakai’s Fourth World, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002.

He is an avid supporter of music education, holding a position as Adjunct Faculty/Horn Instructor at Phoenix College and having spent more than 15 years teaching a studio of private horn students of all ages from around the Phoenix area. Mr. Mitchell received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in horn performance from Arizona State University.
