[ Jill Marderness ]
From
childhood as an Iowa farm girl, Jill's musical talents led her to the
University of Michigan where she completed the Bachelor and Master of
Music degrees, with further training/studies at Music Academy of the
West and doctoral program of Arizona State University's School of Music.
Jill's extensive performance career has since included nearly thirty
years both with Quintessence Chamber Ensemble and as Artist-in-Residence
with Michigan’s Bay View Music Festival. With Quintessence Jill
has toured from California to the Caribbean and Alaska to the Panama
Canal, and won numerous awards for performance, programming and
commissioning of new works.
Jill
was Silver Medalist of the Minnesota Orchestra Young Artist Competition
and has performed as concerto soloist with orchestras across the
country, chamber musician with the Sedona Chamber Music Festival and Red
Rocks Music Festival, for the children of the Matsumoto Gakuen in Tokyo,
Japan and as orchestral musician with the Flint Symphony, Duluth
Symphony, Colorado Philharmonic and many others.
She participated on
panels addressing "The Performer as Educator" at the Chamber Music
America National Conference, the Music Educators National Conference and
“Outreach Within Residencies” for the Western Arts Alliance Conference.
Jill has served on the faculties of Saint Cloud State University (MN), Interlochen’s
National Music Camp, Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Grand Canyon University,
Bay View College Conservatory of Music, Glendale College, Phoenix
College, Central Community School of the Arts and Arizona School for the
Arts.
Currently Second Bassoonist with
the Arizona Opera Orchestra (since 2000), Jill is also regularly engaged
as extra bassoon/contrabassoon with The Phoenix Symphony and Tucson
Symphony Orchestra. She is also Grant Writer and Outreach Coordinator
for the Red Rocks Music Festival and serves on the Programming Committee
for Scottsdale Congregational United Church of Christ. A private
teacher of woodwinds and piano, Jill resides in Scottsdale with her
husband Fred Marderness, Percussionist with The Phoenix Symphony,
daughter Emily Rose born in 1996, and a Chihuahua-mix named Sparky.
