Nathan Mitchell

Nathan Mitchell has been a member of the Arizona Opera Orchestra since the 2000-2001 season. Mr. Mitchell also performs regularly with the Phoenix Symphony, Tucson Symphony and New Mexico Symphony and is the founding hornist in the Sonoran Brass Quintet.  Since 1997 he has spent the summers serving as Principal Horn and Faculty Brass Coordinator of the AIMS Festival Orchestra in Graz, Austria.

A versatile artist, he is in demand for Broadway productions, having performed with the national touring companies of Wicked, The Lion King, Mary Poppins, The Producers, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, West Side Story, 42nd Street, Kiss Me Kate, Titanic, Guys and Dolls, Fiddler on the Roof, The Sound of Music and innumerable others.  He has also toured with the national touring company of Camelot, starring Lou Diamond Phillips.

Mr. Mitchell’s concert appearances include engagements with Barry Manilow, Michael Crawford, The Moody Blues, Johnny Mathis, Clay Aiken, Mannheim Steamroller and Josh Groban.  He can be heard on numerous recordings, including A Brassy Night at the Opera featuring Sam Pilafian, Thomas Bacon and David Hickman, and Capitol Quartet: Anything Goes, both on Summit Records, as well as R. Carlos Nakai’s Fourth World, which was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002.  Mr. Mitchell is also featured on the Sonoran Brass Quintet’s debut album, Dry Heat.

He is an active supporter of music education, holds positions as Adjunct Faculty/Horn Instructor at both Mesa Community College and Phoenix College and has spent more than 15 years teaching a studio of private horn students of all ages from around the Phoenix area. Mr. Mitchell received both his Bachelor of Music and Master of Music degrees in horn performance from Arizona State University.
